PAGE TURNER WORKSHOP

Photobook workflow: photography, the book and self-publishing

September 3—October 2-4, 2020

(online and on site)

Introduction

In this workshop, participants have the opportunity to develop a photobook dummy to present at the Photobook Week Aarhus

Teaching pattern:

Blended learning: 2 days online workshops on Zoom with opportunity for both group and 1:1 tutorials
and 2 days face to face in Aarhus.

In this workshop taught by paula roush (msdm.org.uk) participants plan and create a photobook dummy, using a photographic collection they are currently working with.

The workshop follows a blended mode of learning:

In September we meet online
—Paula maps out the field of small-scale independent photobook publishing, and presents design/printing/book-binding workflows for self-publishing;

—Participants share their initial ideas for constructive feed forward, followed by 1:1 online tutorials for research & development

In October we meet at Photobook Week Aarhus

—participants get support to print and bind their photobook dummies;

—completed photobook dummies are exhibited as part of the Photobook Week Aarhus.

During this blended learning workshop participants learn about small-scale models of photobook publishing, and practice the integration of photographic and book art practices.

The workshop is for those already working on a photobook or intending to develop one from an existing photographic collection.

About the Instructor:

paula is a photographer and founder of msdm,  a London-based house-studio-gallery for photographic practice. Established as an imprint of msdm studio, msdm publications aim to create a small-scale model of photobook publishing, encompassing photographic practice and book art processes. The studio’s current research focus is on photobooks as sequential archives.

She is also Senior Lecturer in Art Photography and Photobook Publishing in the School of Arts and Creative Industries at the London South Bank University, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her photobooks are in several artists’ books collections including the National Art Library at the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Centre Pompidou’s Kandinsky Library.

In this intensive workshop you will learn the secrets of correct paper/printer combinations and the combination of hand-made and digital techniques that paula has perfected for photobook dummies and small editions through a decade of research.
